Structural and pressure-vessel plate steel grades
Structural steels such as IS 2062 and ASTM A36 are carbon–manganese steels for beams, columns, plates and fabricated structures, specified mainly by yield strength and weldability (carbon equivalent).
What structural & plate steel is
Pressure-vessel plates such as ASTM A516 Grade 60 and 70 are fine-grain carbon steels with controlled toughness for boilers, tanks and pressure vessels, usually supplied normalised for thicker plates. Teshi Group supplies these plates and sections as a stockist and supplier.
- Carbon 0.20–0.31 % depending on grade and thickness
- Manganese 0.60–1.60 %
- Carbon equivalent limits for weldability (IS 2062)
- Normalised or as-rolled, with optional impact testing

Where structural & plate steel is used
- Steel structures, pipe racks and platforms
- Pressure vessels, boilers and storage tanks
- Skids, frames and fabricated assemblies
- Plant buildings and equipment supports
Welding and fabrication
Check carbon equivalent and plate thickness when choosing preheat. For pressure vessels, order A516 normalised (A20 supplementary requirements) with impact testing at the design metal temperature.
FAQ
Structural & plate steel: common questions
What is the difference between A516 Grade 60 and Grade 70?
Grade 70 is stronger (yield 260 MPa, tensile 485–620 MPa) than Grade 60 (yield 220 MPa, tensile 415–550 MPa). Grade 60 has slightly better toughness and formability.
Is IS 2062 E250 equivalent to ASTM A36?
They are broadly comparable structural steels with 250 MPa minimum yield, but chemistry, testing and toughness requirements differ, so they are not directly interchangeable without review.
