What are Stainless Steel Sheet & Coil?

Stainless sheet and coil are covered for pressure and general use by ASTM A240, with dimensional tolerances, definitions and surface finishes in ASTM A480. Under A480, sheet is material under 3/16 in (4.76 mm) thick and 24 in (610 mm) and wider; thicker material is plate. Common finishes are No.1 (hot rolled, annealed and pickled), 2B (cold rolled, annealed, pickled and skin-passed), BA (bright annealed) and No. 4 (brushed). Sheet is used for vessel cladding and linings, ducting, food and pharmaceutical equipment, kitchen equipment and architectural panels.

FAQ

Stainless Steel Sheet & Coil: common questions

What is 2B finish?

2B is a cold-rolled, annealed, pickled and lightly skin-passed finish defined in ASTM A480. It is smooth and moderately reflective and is the most common sheet finish.

When does sheet become plate?

Under ASTM A480, flat material 3/16 in (4.76 mm) and thicker, and over 10 in wide, is plate. Thinner material is sheet or strip. This definition affects which finish and tolerance apply.

Which grade should I choose for food equipment?

304 or 304L is common for general food contact. 316 or 316L is used with salts, brines or acidic foods. Follow your hygiene and process specification.

Does Teshi manufacture stainless sheet?

No. Teshi Group is a stockist and supplier of Stainless Steel Sheet and Coil, sourced from established mills and supplied with the original mill test certificate. Teshi is an OEM manufacturer of flanges, fittings, fasteners, valves and custom fabrications, which can be ordered with it.
