SS 316 / 316L Plates — ASTM A240
SS 316 and 316L plate is molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel plate for chloride and chemical service. Teshi Group stocks and supplies ASTM A240 / ASME SA-240 316 (UNS S31600) and 316L (UNS S31603) plate, sheet and coil. Quotes are sent in 24–48 hours.
Also called: SS 316 plate, 316L plate, stainless 316 sheet, 1.4404 plate, UNS S31603 plate
What is an SS 316 / 316L Plate?
Type 316 adds 2–3% molybdenum to the 18-8 austenitic base, which improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments and to many process chemicals. 316L limits carbon to 0.030% for welded construction without post-weld solution annealing; dual-certified 316/316L is common. It is used for chemical and pharmaceutical vessels, marine and coastal equipment, pulp and paper plant, and food processing with brines. Variants such as 316Ti and 316H are supplied against order.

316L vs 304L plate
Both are low-carbon austenitic grades with the same minimum strength under ASTM A240. The difference is molybdenum: 316L contains 2.00–3.00% Mo and more nickel, which raises resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chlorides and to many acids. 304L is the economical choice for fresh water, atmospheric and mildly corrosive service. Where chlorides, brines or coastal exposure are present, 316L is normally specified.

FAQ
SS 316 / 316L Plate: common questions
What is the difference between 316 and 304?
316 contains 2–3% molybdenum and slightly more nickel, giving better resistance to pitting in chloride environments. 304 has no molybdenum and costs less. For most chloride-bearing service, 316 or 316L is preferred.
What is the difference between 316 and 316L?
316L has carbon limited to 0.030% against 0.08% for 316, reducing the risk of intergranular corrosion after welding. Its minimum strength is slightly lower. Dual-certified 316/316L plate covers both.
Is 316L suitable for seawater?
316L performs better than 304 but can still pit and crevice-corrode in warm seawater. Duplex 2205, super duplex 2507 or 6Mo grades such as UNS S31254 are used for more severe chloride service.
Does Teshi manufacture stainless plate?
No. Teshi Group is a stockist and supplier of SS 316 / 316L Plate, sourced from established mills and supplied with the original mill test certificate. Teshi is an OEM manufacturer of flanges, fittings, fasteners, valves and custom fabrications, which can be ordered with it.
