Coupling Nuts — ASME B18.2.2 & DIN 6334

Coupling nuts are long hexagon nuts that join two threaded rods or studs end to end. Teshi Group manufactures hex coupling nuts to ASME B18.2.2 and DIN 6334 in carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel.

Also called: hex coupling nuts, extension nuts, rod coupling nuts, long nuts, DIN 6334 nuts

What are Coupling Nuts?

A coupling nut is an internally threaded hexagon bar, several times longer than a standard nut. Two threaded rods are screwed in from each end until they meet near the middle, giving a continuous rod, or a rod is extended to reach a support. Coupling nuts are used on hanger rods for pipe supports, anchor rods, tie rods and long studs. Some are made with a sight hole at mid-length to confirm both rods are engaged.

Key features

  • Hex coupling nuts to ASME B18.2.2; metric to DIN 6334 (length 3 × d)
  • Carbon steel, ASTM A194 2H / A563 and stainless 304 / 316
  • Right-hand thread both ends; left/right-hand on request
  • Sight hole option to check rod engagement
  • Plain, zinc or hot-dip galvanised finish

FAQ

Coupling Nuts: common questions

What is a coupling nut used for?

A coupling nut joins two threaded rods end to end, or extends a rod or stud that is too short. Common uses are pipe hanger rods, anchor rod extensions and suspended supports for cable tray and ducting.

How long is a coupling nut?

DIN 6334 metric hex coupling nuts are three times the thread diameter long, for example 36 mm for M12. Inch hex coupling nut lengths and widths are given in ASME B18.2.2.

Should the coupling nut match the rod grade?

Yes. Use a coupling nut whose proof load is at least equal to the rod strength, for example a 2H or grade 8 nut with high-strength rod.

Are coupling nuts available in stainless steel?

Yes. Coupling nuts are made in 304 and 316 stainless steel as well as carbon and alloy steel. Stainless coupling nuts are used for hangers in coastal sites, chemical plants and food processing areas.
