Flat & Spring Washers — ASME B18.22.1, ASTM F436, DIN 125

Washers are thin plates placed under a nut or bolt head to spread load or resist loosening. Teshi Group manufactures plain flat washers, hardened washers and helical spring washers to ASME, ASTM, ISO, DIN and IS standards in carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel.

Also called: plain washers, flat washers, spring washers, lock washers, F436 hardened washers, DIN 125 washers

What are Flat & Spring Washers?

A flat washer is a disc with a central hole that spreads clamping load over a larger area, protects the surface and bridges oversize holes. Hardened washers to ASTM F436 are used under high-strength structural bolts and nuts so that tightening does not gall or embed into the steel. A spring (helical lock) washer is a split, twisted ring that adds spring tension under the nut. Washers are supplied loose or with bolt and stud sets.

FAQ

Flat & Spring Washers: common questions

When is an ASTM F436 washer required?

F436 hardened washers are specified under the turned element of high-strength structural bolts, such as ASTM F3125 A325 and A490, and over oversize or slotted holes, per the structural bolting specification.

Do spring washers stop bolts loosening?

Spring washers add some spring tension under the nut, but they are not reliable on high-strength or vibrating joints. For those, use prevailing torque lock nuts or bolts tightened to the correct preload instead.

Is DIN 125 the same as ISO 7089?

ISO 7089 has replaced DIN 125 for metric plain washers and the two are treated as interchangeable. Sizes in ISO 7089 are based on thread diameter and run from 1.6 to 64 mm; both designations still appear on orders.

Can washers be supplied with bolt and stud sets?

Yes. Flat, hardened or spring washers can be packed with matching bolts, studs and nuts as complete sets, in the same material grade and coating, with certificates covering every component.
