Socket Weld Unions — MSS SP-83
A socket weld union is a three-piece forged fitting that joins two pipes and can be opened later without cutting the line. Teshi Group manufactures socket weld unions to MSS SP-83 in Class 3000 and 6000, in carbon, low-temperature, alloy and stainless steels.
Also called: SW union, forged union, socket welding union, MSS SP-83 union, pipe union socket weld
What is a Socket Weld Union?
A union has a male end, a female end and a threaded nut that draws them together. Each end has a socket that is fillet welded to the pipe; the nut can be undone to separate the line for maintenance, equipment removal or cleaning. MSS SP-83 covers Class 3000 and 6000 pipe unions with socket welding and threaded ends in carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steels and nickel alloys. The seat is usually a ground metal-to-metal joint.
Key features
- Dimensions and testing per MSS SP-83

- Skid-mounted packages
Union vs coupling
A coupling joins two pipes permanently with two fillet welds. A union also has two welded ends, but they are held together by a threaded nut on a ground seat, so the joint can be opened and closed without cutting the pipe. Use unions next to pumps, strainers, instruments or equipment that must be removed for maintenance; use couplings for permanent in-line joints. Check that the piping specification allows unions for the service.
FAQ
Socket Weld Union: common questions
Which standard covers socket weld unions?
MSS SP-83 covers Class 3000 and 6000 pipe unions with socket welding and threaded ends, in carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steels and nickel alloys.
Can unions be used in high-temperature service?
Unions are limited by the seat and thread design. Many piping specifications restrict unions in hot, cyclic or hazardous service — check your piping class.
Do the three parts come assembled?
Yes. Unions are supplied as an assembled set of male end, female end and nut, with the class, material and size marked so the parts can be traced to the certificate.
Do you supply stainless steel unions?
Yes. ASTM A182 F304L and F316L socket weld unions are supplied in Class 3000 and 6000 with PMI reports and EN 10204 3.1 certificates, and third-party inspection when specified.
