Weldolet, Sockolet & Threadolet Branch Outlets — MSS SP-97

Weldolets, sockolets and threadolets are forged branch outlet fittings that are welded onto a run pipe to make a smaller branch connection with built-in reinforcement. Teshi Group manufactures integrally reinforced branch outlets to MSS SP-97 with butt weld, socket weld and threaded outlets, in carbon, low-temperature, alloy and stainless steels.

Also called: olets, branch outlet fittings, weldolet, sockolet, threadolet, thredolet, integrally reinforced branch outlet

What are Weldolet, Sockolet & Threadolet?

A branch outlet (olet) is a forged fitting contoured to sit on the run pipe over a hole. It is attached with a full-penetration weld, and its body provides the reinforcement the branch needs, so no separate pad is required. The outlet end is bevelled for butt welding (weldolet), socketed for socket welding (sockolet) or threaded NPT (threadolet). MSS SP-97 covers these integrally reinforced forged branch outlet fittings. Olets are used where the branch is much smaller than the run.

Key features

  • Integral reinforcement per MSS SP-97 — no reinforcement pad
  • Butt weld, socket weld and threaded outlets
  • Contoured to fit the run pipe size
  • Fewer welds than a reducing tee for small branches
  • Weldolet wall matched to branch pipe: STD, XS, Sch 160, XXS

Applications

  • Instrument, thermowell and pressure gauge tappings
  • Drain and vent connections on headers
  • Small branches from large process lines
  • Steam and condensate headers
  • Pipeline take-offs

Weldolet vs sockolet vs threadolet

All three are welded to the run pipe the same way; they differ in the outlet. A weldolet has a bevelled outlet for a butt-welded branch and is used for larger branches and severe service. A sockolet takes a socket-welded branch, common for small-bore lines. A threadolet has an NPT outlet for screwed connections such as gauges, thermowells and plugs.

FAQ

Weldolet, Sockolet & Threadolet: common questions

What is the standard for weldolets, sockolets and threadolets?

MSS SP-97, Integrally Reinforced Forged Branch Outlet Fittings — Socket Welding, Threaded and Buttwelding Ends. Socket and thread details follow ASME B16.11 and ASME B1.20.1.

Are Weldolet, Sockolet and Thredolet brand names?

Yes, they are trade names of Bonney Forge that are widely used as generic terms. The generic terms are butt weld, socket weld and threaded branch outlets to MSS SP-97.

How do I specify an olet?

Give run pipe size, branch size, type, rating (schedule or class), material and standard, for example: Weldolet 10" × 2", Sch 80, ASTM A105, MSS SP-97.

When is an olet preferred over a reducing tee?

When the branch is much smaller than the run. An olet needs only the branch welds and no cut in the header line, while a tee needs three butt welds.
