Socket Weld Tees — ASME B16.11
A socket weld tee is a forged fitting with three sockets, used to branch small-bore pipe at 90°. Teshi Group manufactures socket weld tees to ASME B16.11 in Class 3000, 6000 and 9000, in carbon, low-temperature, alloy and stainless steels.
Also called: SW tee, forged socket weld tee, socket welding tee, equal socket weld tee
What is a Socket Weld Tee?
A socket weld tee is machined from a solid forging with a socket on the run and branch ends. Pipe is inserted into each socket and fillet welded. Equal tees have the same size on all ends; reducing tees have a smaller branch. Forged tees are compact and strong, and are widely used for small-bore branches, instrument tappings and drain connections where a butt weld tee would be harder to fit up.
Key features
- Equal and reducing tees per ASME B16.11
- Class 3000, 6000 and 9000
- Machined from forgings with controlled socket depth and bore
- Fillet weld joints, no internal weld bead

FAQ
Socket Weld Tee: common questions
What is the difference between Class 3000 and Class 6000 tees?
They have different wall thicknesses. A Class 3000 socket weld tee is designed for use with Sch 80 pipe and a Class 6000 tee for Sch 160 pipe of equivalent material.
Do you supply reducing socket weld tees?
Yes. Reducing socket weld tees with a smaller branch socket can be machined to order. Please state the run and branch sizes, class and material in the enquiry.
What is the maximum size for socket weld tees?
ASME B16.11 covers socket weld fittings up to NPS 4", but most piping specifications use socket weld only up to NPS 1½" or 2" and butt weld fittings above that.
How should socket weld joints be prepared?
Leave a gap of about 1/16" (1.5 mm) between the pipe end and the socket bottom before welding, per ASME B31.1/B31.3 practice, to allow for weld shrinkage.
