Safety & Relief Valves — API 526

Safety and relief valves open automatically at a set pressure to protect equipment and piping from overpressure. Teshi Group manufactures spring-loaded safety, relief and safety-relief valves to API 526 with seat tightness testing to API 527.

Also called: pressure relief valve, PRV, PSV, safety valve, spring loaded relief valve, API 526 relief valve

Sizes (inlet × outlet)1 × 2 up to 8 × 10

What are Safety & Relief Valve?

A pressure relief valve holds a disc on its seat with a spring set to a chosen pressure. When system pressure reaches the set point, the valve lifts and discharges fluid until pressure falls, then recloses. Safety valves pop open fully for gas and steam; relief valves open in proportion for liquids; safety-relief valves serve both. Conventional valves are affected by back-pressure, while balanced bellows valves compensate for it. API 526 standardises orifice letters, sizes, ratings and dimensions for flanged steel valves.

Key features

  • Conventional and balanced bellows spring-loaded designs
  • API 526 orifice designations D to T, inlet NPS 1–8
  • Open or closed bonnet; lifting lever and test gag options
  • Set pressure tested and sealed at works
  • Seat tightness tested to API 527

Safety valve vs relief valve

A safety valve opens with a rapid full lift, called pop action, and is used for compressible fluids such as steam, air and gas. A relief valve opens gradually in proportion to overpressure and is used for liquids. A safety-relief valve is designed to work in either mode. Selection depends on the fluid, the required relieving capacity and the back-pressure at the outlet.

FAQ

Safety & Relief Valve: common questions

What do API 526 orifice letters mean?

Each letter from D to T stands for a standard effective orifice area. API 526 links each letter to inlet and outlet sizes, flange classes and centre-to-face dimensions so valves from different makers are interchangeable.

When is a balanced bellows valve needed?

When built-up or variable back-pressure would change the set pressure or capacity of a conventional valve, or to protect the spring and bonnet from corrosive discharge.

What is API 527?

API 527 sets the methods and acceptance limits for seat tightness of pressure relief valves, checked at a test pressure below set pressure after the set test.

Can relief valves be supplied for IBR steam service?

Yes. Valves for boiler and steam service can be supplied with IBR certification documentation when the order specifies it. Boiler safety valves must also meet the requirements of the inspecting authority for that installation.
