Ball Valves — API 6D & ISO 17292

Ball valves are quarter-turn valves that open and close by rotating a bored ball 90°. Teshi Group manufactures floating and trunnion-mounted ball valves to API 6D for pipelines and ISO 17292 / API 608 for process plants.

Also called: floating ball valve, trunnion ball valve, API 6D ball valve, quarter-turn valve, full bore ball valve

What is a Ball Valve?

A ball valve uses a sphere with a through bore, held between two seats. A quarter turn lines the bore up with the pipe for flow or turns it across to shut off. Ball valves give tight shutoff, fast operation and, in full bore form, low pressure drop and pigging capability. In a floating ball design the line pressure pushes the ball onto the downstream seat; in trunnion-mounted designs the ball is fixed on trunnions and spring-loaded seats seal against it, reducing operating torque in larger sizes and higher classes.

Key features

  • Floating ball and trunnion-mounted designs
  • Full bore and reduced bore; double block and bleed on trunnion valves
  • Soft seats (PTFE, RPTFE, PEEK, nylon) or metal seats with hard coating
  • Fire-safe design (fire type-testing to API 607 / ISO 10497 when the order specifies) and anti-static, blow-out-proof stem
  • Lever, gear or actuator operation; ISO 5211 mounting pad

Floating vs trunnion ball valve

In a floating ball valve the ball is held only by the seats and line pressure pushes it against the downstream seat to seal. It is simple and economical in smaller sizes and lower classes. In a trunnion-mounted valve the ball is fixed by upper and lower trunnions and spring-loaded seats move onto it, so operating torque stays lower and it suits large sizes, high classes and double block and bleed duty.

FAQ

Ball Valve: common questions

What is the difference between API 6D and ISO 17292?

API 6D covers pipeline valves, including ball valves for transmission and gathering lines, with its own testing rules. ISO 17292 covers metal ball valves for process plants in DN 8–600, Class 150–600 and 800, PN 16–100.

What does fire-safe mean for a ball valve?

The valve design has secondary metal-to-metal seals that limit leakage if the soft seats burn away. Fire-safe designs are type-tested to API 607 or ISO 10497.

Full bore or reduced bore?

Full bore matches the pipe ID, giving low pressure drop and allowing pigging. Reduced bore is one size smaller internally, lighter and lower in cost, and suits most process isolation.

Do Teshi ball valves carry the API 6D monogram?

No. Teshi does not hold an API monogram licence. Valves are made to the stated standard and tested accordingly, with EN 10204 3.1 certificates and third-party inspection when specified.
