Butterfly Valves — API 609 Category A & B

Butterfly valves are quarter-turn valves that control flow with a disc rotating on a shaft across the bore. Teshi Group manufactures concentric and double / triple offset butterfly valves to API 609 in wafer, lug, double-flanged and butt-weld patterns.

Also called: triple offset butterfly valve, double offset butterfly valve, high performance butterfly valve, wafer butterfly valve, lug butterfly valve

What is a Butterfly Valve?

A butterfly valve has a disc mounted on a shaft in the centre of the flow path. A quarter turn moves it from closed to fully open. The valve is short and light compared with gate or ball valves of the same size, which makes it economical in large lines. Concentric, rubber-lined valves suit water and low-pressure service. Double offset (high-performance) and triple offset designs move the disc clear of the seat as it opens, allowing metal or PTFE seats, higher classes and tight shutoff in hydrocarbon and steam service.

Key features

  • API 609 Category A: concentric, resilient-seated, CWP rated
  • API 609 Category B: double offset and triple offset, ASME class rated
  • Wafer, lug, double-flanged (short/long pattern) and butt-weld bodies
  • Resilient, PTFE/RPTFE or laminated metal seats
  • Lever, gear or actuator; fire-safe design to API 607 on request

  • HVAC and district cooling
  • Hydrocarbon and steam isolation (triple offset)
  • Large-diameter process lines

Concentric vs triple offset butterfly valve

A concentric valve has the shaft through the disc centre and seals on a rubber liner; it is economical for water and low-pressure service but limited by elastomer temperature. A triple offset valve offsets the shaft twice and the seat cone once, so the disc lifts clear without rubbing and seals metal-to-metal. It handles higher temperatures and classes and gives tight shutoff in hydrocarbon and steam lines.

FAQ

Butterfly Valve: common questions

What is the difference between API 609 Category A and B?

Category A covers concentric butterfly valves rated by cold working pressure, NPS 2–60, with Class 125 or 150 drilling. Category B covers offset-seat valves rated to ASME classes 150, 300 and 600.

Wafer or lug butterfly valve?

A wafer valve is clamped between flanges by through bolts. A lug valve has threaded lugs so one side of the pipe can be removed while the valve still holds pressure on the other.

Can a butterfly valve throttle?

Yes, within limits. Butterfly valves are commonly used for flow control between about 30° and 70° open; outside that range control is poor and seat wear rises.

Do Teshi butterfly valves carry the API monogram?

No. Teshi does not hold an API monogram licence. Butterfly valves are manufactured to the requirements of API 609 and tested to API 598, with EN 10204 3.1 certificates and third-party inspection when specified.
