Check Valves — Swing, Lift & Dual Plate

Check valves, or non-return valves, let fluid flow in one direction and close automatically when flow reverses. Teshi Group manufactures swing, lift (piston) and dual plate check valves to API 594 and API 602 in cast and forged steel.

Also called: non-return valve, NRV, swing check valve, lift check valve, dual plate check valve, wafer check valve

SizesAPI 594: NPS 2–48 (DN 50–1200); API 602: NPS ¼–4

What is a Check Valve?

A check valve opens under forward flow and closes by gravity, spring force or back-pressure when flow stops, protecting pumps, compressors and systems from reverse flow. Swing check valves hinge a disc off the seat and suit larger lines with steady flow. Lift (piston) check valves move a disc or ball vertically and are common in small forged valves. Dual plate check valves use two spring-loaded half-plates in a short wafer body, saving weight and space and closing fast to reduce water hammer.

Key features

  • Swing check: API 594 Type B or ASME B16.34, bolted cover
  • Dual plate wafer, lug and double-flanged: API 594 Type A
  • Lift / piston and ball check: API 602 forged, NPS ¼–4
  • Spring-assisted closure to limit slam and water hammer
  • Horizontal or vertical (upward flow) installation per design

Swing check vs dual plate check valve

A swing check has a single hinged disc in a full-size body; it has low pressure drop but is long and heavy and can slam on sudden flow reversal. A dual plate check (API 594 Type A) uses two spring-loaded half-discs in a short wafer or lug body, so it is lighter, fits between flanges and closes faster, which reduces water hammer. Dual plate is common on pump discharge and large water lines.

FAQ

Check Valve: common questions

What are API 594 Type A and Type B?

Type A valves have short face-to-face dimensions (wafer, lug or double-flanged, single or dual plate). Type B valves have ASME B16.10 face-to-face dimensions with flanged or butt-welding ends and a swing or pivoting disc.

Can a check valve be installed vertically?

Swing and dual plate valves can be installed in vertical lines with upward flow. Lift check valves are made for either horizontal or vertical service; specify the orientation when ordering.

Is a non-return valve the same as a check valve?

Yes. Non-return valve, or NRV, is the term commonly used in India and the UK for a check valve. Both names describe a valve that allows flow in one direction and closes against reverse flow.

What size range does API 594 cover?

API 594 covers check valves NPS 2 through NPS 48 (DN 50 to 1200) in ASME Class 150 to 2500, plus cast iron Classes 125 and 250. Smaller forged check valves fall under API 602.
