Socket Weld Flanges — ASME B16.5

A socket weld flange is a small-bore flange with a counterbored socket that the pipe fits into and is fillet-welded at the hub. Teshi Group manufactures socket weld flanges to ASME B16.5 in carbon, low-temperature, alloy and stainless steels, with the socket bore matched to your pipe schedule.

Also called: SW flange, SWRF flange, socket welding flange

What is a Socket Weld Flange?

A socket weld (SW) flange has a socket machined to receive the pipe end, with a shoulder at the bottom and a smaller bore below it matching the pipe ID. The pipe is inserted, withdrawn about 1.6 mm (1/16″) to leave an expansion gap, and fillet-welded at the hub. The joint is compact and leak-tight without a butt weld, which makes it common on small-bore, high-pressure lines. Because of the crevice between pipe and socket, it is avoided in corrosive or crevice-sensitive services and where full radiography is required.

Key features

  • Socket counterbore for the pipe; single external fillet weld
  • Bore below the socket matched to pipe schedule
  • Raised face standard; RTJ when specified
  • Compact and lighter than a weld neck in small sizes
  • Pairs with ASME B16.11 socket weld fittings on the same line

  • Steam drains and trap stations
  • Chemical dosing lines

Socket weld flange vs threaded flange

Both suit small bores. A socket weld flange is welded, so it is leak-tight under vibration and temperature cycles but cannot be dismantled at the pipe joint. A threaded flange needs no welding and is used where hot work is restricted, but threads can leak under cycling and are not recommended for high temperatures. For hydrocarbon and steam lines, socket weld is the more common choice.

FAQ

Socket Weld Flange: common questions

What sizes and classes does ASME B16.5 cover for socket weld flanges?

NPS ½″ to 3″ in Classes 150, 300 and 600, and NPS ½″ to 2½″ in Class 1500. Class 900 in these small sizes uses the Class 1500 dimensions. Class 2500 socket weld flanges are not covered.

Why leave a gap at the bottom of the socket?

A gap of about 1.6 mm (1/16″) between the pipe end and the socket shoulder allows for thermal expansion of the pipe during welding and service, reducing the risk of cracking at the fillet weld root.

Do I need to give the pipe schedule?

Yes. The bore below the socket is machined to the pipe ID, so state the schedule, for example NPS 1 Sch 80, so the bore matches and there is no step.

Are socket weld flanges suitable for corrosive service?

They are generally avoided where crevice corrosion is a concern, because the gap between the pipe and the socket can trap fluid. Weld neck flanges are used instead in those services.
