Butt Weld Pipe Caps — ASME B16.9

A butt weld pipe cap is a dished fitting welded onto the end of a pipe to close it permanently. Teshi Group manufactures pipe caps to ASME B16.9 in carbon, low-temperature, alloy and stainless steels, matched to your pipe schedule.

Also called: pipe end cap, buttweld cap, weld cap, BW cap, dished end cap

StandardASME B16.9
Size rangeNPS ½"–48" (DN 15–1200) as covered by ASME B16.9
Materials — carbon & low-temp steelASTM A234 WPB, WPC; ASTM A420 WPL6

What is a Butt Weld Pipe Cap?

A butt weld cap has an elliptical or dished profile and a bevelled open end that is welded to the pipe. It seals a line end, header end or dead leg permanently, with the same pressure capacity as the pipe when ordered in a matching schedule and material. ASME B16.9 gives the cap length for each size, with a longer length for heavier walls. Where the line may need to be opened later, a blind flange is used instead.

Key features

  • Elliptical/dished profile per ASME B16.9
  • Wall thickness matched to the pipe schedule
  • Single butt weld to close a line permanently
  • Ends bevelled to ASME B16.25

  • Header and manifold ends
  • Dead-end branches and future tie-ins
  • Drip legs and dirt pockets
  • Pipeline end closures
  • Steam and condensate headers

Pipe cap vs blind flange

A butt weld cap is welded on and is permanent. It is lighter and cheaper than a blind flange and has no gasket or bolting that can leak. A blind flange bolts onto a mating flange and can be removed for inspection, cleaning, pigging or a future extension of the line. Use a cap where the end will stay closed for the life of the plant; use a blind flange where access is needed.

FAQ

Butt Weld Pipe Cap: common questions

What is the shape of a butt weld cap?

ASME B16.9 caps have an elliptical or dished head with a short straight skirt that ends in a bevel for butt welding to the pipe. The standard gives a longer cap length for heavier walls.

Does the cap need a higher schedule than the pipe?

No. A B16.9 cap ordered in the same schedule and an equivalent material to the pipe is rated the same as the straight seamless pipe, so it does not need a heavier wall.

Can you drill or tap a cap for a vent or drain?

Yes. Caps can be supplied with a machined or threaded connection for a vent or drain when it is specified in the order, subject to approval of the detail by the piping engineer.

Which material do you recommend for carbon steel lines?

ASTM A234 WPB is the standard match for ASTM A106 Gr B or API 5L Gr B pipe. For low-temperature service, use ASTM A420 WPL6 caps with impact test results.
