What is a 45° Butt Weld Elbow?
A 45° butt weld elbow is a wrought fitting that turns flow through 45°. ASME B16.9 covers 45° elbows in the long radius pattern, with a bend radius of 1.5 × NPS. Because the change of direction is gentler than a 90° elbow, it gives lower pressure drop and is used for offsets, lateral routing and where piping must step around obstructions. The ends are bevelled for a full-penetration butt weld, so the fitting carries the same rating as the matching pipe.

45° Butt Weld Elbow: common questions
Are 45° elbows available in short radius?
ASME B16.9 dimensions cover 45° elbows in the long radius pattern only. If a layout needs a tighter 45° turn, it is usually made by cutting a 90° SR elbow, which should be approved by the piping engineer.
Can two 45° elbows replace one 90° elbow?
Yes, two 45° elbows can form a 90° turn with a longer, gentler path. It adds one weld joint, so it is mostly used where an offset is needed between the two bends.
How is the wall thickness specified?
Order the elbow by pipe schedule or wall thickness, for example Sch 40 or Sch 80. The fitting ends then match the bore and wall of the connecting pipe.
Which certificates come with the elbows?
Each lot is supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate. Third-party inspection to 3.2 and IBR certification are provided when the order specifies them.
