180° Return Bend — OEM manufacturer, Teshi Group

OEM manufacturer ASME B16.9 · ASME B16.25

180° Return Bends — Long Radius & Short Radius, ASME B16.9

A 180° return bend reverses the flow direction of a pipeline in a single butt weld fitting. Teshi Group manufactures long radius and short radius 180° returns to ASME B16.9 in carbon, alloy, low-temperature and stainless steels.

Also called: 180 degree return, 180° elbow, U bend, return bend, LR return, SR return

What is a 180° Return Bend?

A 180° return is a U-shaped wrought fitting that turns flow back on itself. ASME B16.9 covers long radius returns (centre-to-centre distance based on a 1.5 × NPS radius) and short radius returns (1.0 × NPS radius). Returns are used to form serpentine coils and to connect parallel tubes or pipes, where using two 90° elbows would add an extra weld and take more space.

Key features

  • Long radius and short radius returns per ASME B16.9
  • One fitting replaces two 90° elbows and a weld joint
  • Wall thickness matched to the pipe schedule
  • Ends bevelled to ASME B16.25

FAQ

180° Return Bend: common questions

Why use a return bend instead of two 90° elbows?

A return bend does the same job in one piece, removing a weld joint and keeping the centre-to-centre distance fixed. This saves fabrication time and is useful in coils with many passes.

What is the centre-to-centre distance of a return?

Nominally it is twice the bend radius: 3 × NPS for long radius and 2 × NPS for short radius returns, with exact values tabulated in ASME B16.9.

Do you supply alloy steel returns for heater coils?

Yes. We supply ASTM A234 WP11, WP22, WP5, WP9 and WP91 returns, with PMI and hardness checks, and IBR certification when the order specifies it.

Can I order returns in stainless steel thin wall?

Yes. ASTM A403 WP304L and WP316L returns can be supplied in Sch 10S and 40S as well as heavier schedules, so that the return matches the bore and wall of the coil pipe.
