Swage Nipples — Concentric & Eccentric, MSS SP-95

A swage nipple is a reducing fitting with male ends that joins a larger pipe to a smaller one, often across different end types. Teshi Group manufactures concentric and eccentric swage nipples to MSS SP-95 with bevelled, plain or threaded ends in any combination.

Also called: swaged nipple, swage, concentric swage nipple, eccentric swage nipple, pipe swage

What is a Swage Nipple?

A swage (swaged) nipple is a male-ended reducing fitting covered by MSS SP-95 in NPS ¼" to 12". Unlike a butt weld reducer, its ends can differ: for example bevelled large end for butt welding and threaded small end for a screwed valve or socket weld fitting. It is used to step down from a butt weld main line to small-bore socket weld or threaded branches. MSS SP-95 identifies swage nipples by wall thickness and material grade rather than a pressure class, and also covers bull plugs.

Key features

  • Concentric and eccentric types per MSS SP-95
  • End combinations: BLE × TSE, BBE, PBE, TBE and others
  • Identified by schedule/wall thickness and material, not pressure class
  • Threaded ends NPT to ASME B1.20.1; bevels to ASME B16.25
  • Bull plugs (male closures) also covered by MSS SP-95

  • Drain and vent assemblies
  • Wellhead and oil & gas hook-ups
  • Valve installations needing a size change

Swage nipple vs butt weld reducer

A B16.9 reducer has two bevelled ends and is welded to pipe on both sides. A swage nipple is longer and can have different ends — for example bevelled on the large end and threaded on the small end — so it can link a butt weld line to a screwed or socket weld fitting. Swages are typically used for small-bore transitions; reducers for larger lines.

FAQ

Swage Nipple: common questions

What do BLE, TSE and PBE mean on a swage nipple?

They describe the ends: BLE is bevel large end, TSE is thread small end, PBE is plain both ends, and BBE is bevel both ends. Combine them to describe each end.

Do swage nipples have a pressure class?

No. MSS SP-95 identifies swage nipples by pipe wall thickness (schedule) and material grade instead of a pressure rating. Specify the schedule of each end.

What is the size range of MSS SP-95?

MSS SP-95 covers swaged nipples from NPS ⅛" to 12" and bull plugs from NPS ⅛" to 12", in both concentric and eccentric forms for swaged nipples.

Are eccentric swage nipples available?

Yes. Both concentric and eccentric swage nipples are covered by MSS SP-95. Eccentric swages keep one side flat and are used on horizontal lines where trapping must be avoided.
