Fabricated Pipe Spools — Technical Data Sheet
Pipe spools are prefabricated sections of piping — pipe, fittings and flanges welded together in the shop — delivered ready to bolt or weld into place. Shop fabrication gives better weld quality and a shorter site schedule than field fabrication.

Typical applications
- Process plants, refineries and power stations
- Steel plant utility and gas piping
- Skid packages and modular plants
Manufacturing
- Review of isometrics and preparation of spool drawings, cutting plans and weld maps.
- Material identification and transfer of heat numbers before cutting.
- Cutting, bevelling, fit-up and welding to qualified procedures by qualified welders.
- Post-weld heat treatment where the code or material requires it.
- Dimensional check, NDT, hydrostatic test, cleaning, painting and tagging.
Inspection and testing
- Visual and dimensional inspection of every spool against the spool drawing.
- Radiography or ultrasonic examination of butt welds to the percentage specified.
- Dye-penetrant or magnetic-particle examination of fillet and socket welds.
- PMI on alloy and stainless welds and components.
- Hydrostatic or pneumatic test when specified; hardness survey after PWHT.
Marking
Each spool tagged and paint-marked with spool number, line number and heat numbers.
Documentation
Material test certificates, weld map with welder identification, WPS / PQR, NDT reports, PWHT charts, dimensional report, hydro test certificate and painting report.
Packing
Flange faces protected with plywood blinds, open ends capped, small-bore branches braced, and spools bundled or crated for transport.

FAQ
Fabricated Pipe Spools: common questions
What is the largest spool you can fabricate?
Spools are sized for road transport — typically up to about 12 m long. Larger assemblies are split with field welds agreed at the drawing stage.
