Threaded Elbows 90° & 45° — ASME B16.11

A threaded elbow is a forged fitting with female threads that turns a small-bore threaded line by 90° or 45°. Teshi Group manufactures 90° and 45° threaded elbows to ASME B16.11 in Class 2000, 3000 and 6000, with NPT threads to ASME B1.20.1.

Also called: screwed elbow, NPT elbow, forged threaded elbow, 90 degree threaded elbow, 45 degree threaded elbow, street elbow

What is a Threaded Elbow?

A threaded (screwed) elbow is machined from a forging with taper pipe threads at each end. Threaded pipe screws into the fitting, so no welding is needed — useful where hot work is restricted or joints must be assembled quickly. Threaded fittings are used on small-bore lines, mostly up to NPS 1½" or 2", in utility, instrument and non-critical services. Street elbows, with one male and one female end, are also covered by ASME B16.11.

Key features

  • Class 2000, 3000 and 6000
  • NPT female threads per ASME B1.20.1, gauged
  • No welding needed for assembly
  • Street elbows (male × female) available

Threaded vs socket weld fittings

Threaded fittings need no welding and can be assembled and taken apart quickly, but cutting threads reduces the effective wall and threaded joints can leak under vibration or thermal cycling. Socket weld fittings are fillet welded and give a stronger, leak-tight joint. Most piping specifications allow threaded joints only in utility or low-hazard services, and require socket weld for hydrocarbons and higher pressures.

FAQ

Threaded Elbow: common questions

Which class of threaded elbow matches Sch 80 pipe?

Class 2000 threaded fittings are rated for use with Sch 80 pipe, Class 3000 with Sch 160 and Class 6000 with XXS, as per the ASME B16.11 rating basis.

What thread do your fittings have?

NPT taper pipe threads to ASME B1.20.1 are standard and are checked with thread gauges. BSPT threads to ISO 7-1 can be supplied on request.

What is a street elbow?

A street elbow has a female thread at one end and a male thread at the other, so it screws directly into another fitting without a nipple. ASME B16.11 covers 90° and 45° street elbows.

How do I prevent leaks on threaded joints?

Use a thread sealant or PTFE tape suited to the service on NPT threads and tighten to normal make-up. For hazardous, cyclic or high-temperature service, many piping specifications require threaded joints to be seal welded.
