What is a Steel Channel?

A channel has a web and two flanges on one side, giving a flat back that bolts or welds easily against other members. ISMC (Indian Standard Medium Channel) sections are rolled to IS 808 with tapered flanges; parallel flange channels (PFC) have uniform flange thickness. Channels are used as secondary beams, purlins, frame members, bracing, base frames for pumps and skids, and trimmers around openings. Back-to-back channels are also used as built-up columns and pipe supports.

FAQ

Steel Channel: common questions

What does ISMC stand for?

Indian Standard Medium Channel. ISMC sizes are designated by depth in millimetres, for example ISMC 150 is 150 mm deep, with dimensions and weights given in IS 808.

Which grade is normally supplied?

IS 2062 E250 is the standard grade for channels; E350 is used for higher strength. Specify the sub-grade (A, BR, B0 or C) if impact testing is required.

Where can I find ISMC weights?

Our IS 808 ISMC chart lists depth, flange width, thicknesses and weight per metre for each size. Weights are nominal and are useful for estimating tonnage and transport.

Does Teshi manufacture steel channels?

No. Teshi Group is a stockist and supplier of Steel Channel, sourced from established mills and supplied with the original mill test certificate. Teshi is an OEM manufacturer of flanges, fittings, fasteners, valves and custom fabrications, which can be ordered with it.
