What is a GI Pipe?

GI (galvanised iron) pipe is carbon steel ERW pipe dipped in molten zinc so that the inside and outside surfaces carry a zinc coating. The zinc corrodes in preference to the steel, protecting it in water and outdoor service. In India, smaller sizes are made to IS 1239 Part 1 in Light (A), Medium (B) and Heavy (C) classes, and larger sizes to IS 3589; galvanising of tubes follows IS 4736. GI pipe is used for potable and process water, fire-fighting, plumbing, fencing and light structural work.

FAQ

GI Pipe: common questions

What do Light, Medium and Heavy class mean in IS 1239?

They are wall-thickness classes for the same nominal bore. Heavy (C) has the thickest wall and highest pressure capacity, Medium (B) is the usual choice for water and fire lines, and Light (A) is used for low-pressure and non-critical service.

Can GI pipe be welded?

It can, but welding burns off the zinc at the joint and produces zinc fumes. GI pipe is normally joined by threading or grooved couplings; if welded, the joint must be re-coated and fume protection used.

Is GI pipe suitable for gas or steam?

GI pipe is mainly used for water and air. Galvanised pipe is generally not used for steam or high-temperature service. Follow your project specification. For steam, carbon steel seamless or ERW pipe to ASTM A106 or A53 is normally specified instead.

Does Teshi manufacture GI pipe?

No. Teshi Group is a stockist and supplier of GI Pipe, sourced from established mills and supplied with the original mill test certificate. Teshi is an OEM manufacturer of flanges, fittings, fasteners, valves and custom fabrications, which can be ordered with it.
