Ring Joint Gaskets — R, RX & BX
Ring joint gaskets are solid metal rings that seal in matching grooves machined in RTJ flanges. Teshi Group stocks and supplies type R (oval and octagonal), RX and BX ring joint gaskets to ASME B16.20 and API 6A.
Also called: RTJ gasket, ring type joint, R ring gasket, RX gasket, BX gasket, octagonal ring gasket
What is a Ring Joint Gasket?
A ring joint gasket is a precision-machined metal ring that sits in a groove on each flange face. When bolts are tightened the ring deforms slightly into the groove walls, forming a metal-to-metal line seal. The ring must be softer than the flange groove, typically 15 to 20 HB lower, so the ring deforms and not the groove. Ring joints are used for high pressure, high temperature and wellhead service where a soft gasket could blow out.
Key features
- Type R oval and octagonal for ASME B16.5, B16.47 Series A and API 6B flanges
- Type RX pressure-energised rings for API 6B flanges
- Type BX rings with pressure-balance hole for API 6BX flanges
- Materials from soft iron to nickel alloys, hardness controlled
- Ring number and material stamped on each ring

R vs RX vs BX ring gasket
Type R rings (oval or octagonal) are the general ring joint for ASME B16.5 / B16.47 and API 6B flanges. RX rings fit the same grooves as octagonal R but have an asymmetric profile that uses internal pressure to improve sealing. BX rings are for API 6BX flanges only, with a pressure-balance hole, and are not interchangeable with R or RX.

FAQ
Ring Joint Gasket: common questions
Why must the ring be softer than the flange groove?
The ring must deform to seal. If it is as hard as the groove, the groove deforms instead and the flange is damaged. Rings are specified 15 to 20 HB softer than the groove.
Can RX rings replace R rings?
RX rings fit the same grooves as octagonal R rings, but some dimensions differ between the two types. One-for-one replacement is not recommended without first checking the ring number against the flange.
Can ring joint gaskets be reused?
No. The ring deforms plastically into the groove when the bolts are tightened, so it will not seal reliably a second time. Fit a new ring every time the joint is broken.
Which ring material should I order?
Match the flange material and service: soft iron or low carbon steel for carbon steel flanges, F5 for Cr-Mo, 304/316 for stainless flanges, Alloy 625 or 825 for corrosive service.
