External and internal threaded flanges are flanges, one of which has a recess (internal thread) and the other an extension (external thread) on the face. The difference between male and female flanges is the recess or extension. Stainless steel male and female flange couplings are very strong and are suitable for connections where the risk of bending cracks is high. ANSI B16.5 male and female flanges are often used in heat exchangers. As for any other flange, there are standards and pressure classes for them, e.g. ANSI B16.5 Class 150 small male and female flange and ASME B16.5 Male & Female Flanges.

Male and female flanges are used in piping with the same alloy material. In principle, flanges made of the same material as the pipelines are preferred. However, other materials can also be used as required or as a substitute. Carbon steel male and female flanges can be supplied in a variety of sizes, such as ASME B16.47 Series A and B male and female flanges. ASTM A182 SS male & female flange material is also commonly used for male & female flange dimensions within the same standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most frequent questions and answers

What do male and female flanges mean?

In the context of pipe fittings, a male flange refers to a flange with a projecting ring or collar that fits into a corresponding recess on a female flange. A female flange, on the other hand, is a flange with a recess or hole that accepts the projecting ring or collar of a male flange. These terms are used to describe the way the two flanges connect and secure together. They are typically used to connect and seal two pipes, valves, or other equipment.

What are the advantages of using a male-female flange?

A male-female flange, also known as a raised face flange, has several advantages over other types of flanges. Some of these advantages include:

  1. Increased strength: The raised face of the flange provides additional material thickness, which increases the strength of the flange and allows it to handle higher pressure ratings.

  2. Better sealing: The raised face provides a better seal for gaskets, reducing the chance of leaks.

  3. Greater versatility: Male-female flanges can be used in a wider variety of applications, including those where a higher pressure rating is required.

  4. Easy to install and align: The raised face allows for easy alignment of the flange during installation, which can reduce installation time and costs.

  5. Can be used with flat-faced flanges: Male-female flanges can be used with flat-faced flanges, which can be useful in situations where a flange with a raised face is not practical.

What are the standard sizes for male and female flanges?

The standard sizes for flanges vary depending on the application and the industry. The most common sizes are 1/2″ to 24″ for pipe flanges, and 3/8″ to 4″ for tubing flanges.

What is the difference between male and female flanges?

A flange is a projecting flat surface or rim used to connect and secure two pipes, valves, or other equipment. A male flange has a projecting ring or collar that fits into a corresponding recess on a female flange.

What are the most common materials used to make male and female flanges?

A raised face flange has a raised ring around the mating surface, while a flat face flange has a flat surface. The raised face is used to increase the pressure rating of the flange, and to provide a gasket seating surface. The flat face is used for low-pressure applications and for applications where gasket flushness is not critical.

What is the difference between raised face and flat face flanges?

A flange is a projecting flat surface or rim used to connect and secure two pipes, valves, or other equipment. A male flange has a projecting ring or collar that fits into a corresponding recess on a female flange.
